Introduction

Hello, my name is Jacquie Barnett and I'm a BACP-registered counsellor and psychotherapist. I provide counselling and psychotherapy in private practice to people over 18 years of age. I am a volunteer school counsellor at a secondary school in Oxford and have three years' experience working as a volunteer counsellor within family and mental health charities in Warwickshire.

My Approach

I am an integrative humanistic counsellor, which essentially means our sessions will be led by you and tailored to suit your needs. I recognise the importance of building a shared agreement for therapy, where your aims and goals underpin the focus of our sessions. I also have a therapeutic aim of empowering you as a client towards recognising and accessing your own wisdom as you are the expert in your own life.

My core modalities are Person-Centred, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt which, briefly, may influence our sessions in the following ways:

Person-Centred reflects my personal belief that all people are essentially good and can fulfil their potential given the conditions of unconditional positive regard, acceptance, honesty and empathy. Therefore, sessions are about me embodying these core conditions to assist you in strengthening your innate sense of self and 'knowing' to help with decision-making, improved self-belief or navigating relationships / life changes etc.

Transactional Analysis looks at how we behave in our transactions with others and offers some useful insights into background psychological processes such as racket feelings from childhood, life scripts or whether we are interacting from a parent, adult or child standpoint. We may therefore talk through these models offered by Transactional Analysis as a way of deepening your exploration of relating.

Gestalt therapy is a more experiential-based therapy, essentially focusing on how of events happening in everyday life are impacting you in the therapy room. We may therefore work creatively with techniques to explore what is going on for you in a felt-sense way e.g. drawing or writing and looking at how things might change through expanded options.

Please note that the above explanations are neither exhaustive nor prescriptive. Clients attend counselling for many reasons and there is nothing too big or too small to bring to therapy. I am passionate about providing a safe, respectful, confidential and calm space to help explore whatever you wish to talk about, without judgement.
As well as my academic qualifications, I am also trained in a number of holistic therapies and therefore have a natural interest in the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit.

It's very important you feel comfortable with your choice of counsellor, hence I offer a free, confidential 15 minute phone call for you to see if I’m the right therapist for you.
